Nubia
Nubia left her native Honduras in hopes of providing a better future for her daughter Dinora who was born with cerebral palsy. After more than 20 years in New York, she returned to her homeland when her mother passed away. After years of sacrifice, she was able to obtain a green card for Dinora, and return to the United States. But her financial situation became increasingly difficult and she was unable to obtain public assistance for her daughter. No longer able to work, Nubia lost everything. "I remember crying a lot and being unable to sleep with the thought of having to live on the street with my daughter." Honduran Unity referred Nubia to Camillus House, where she found a home at Somerville Residence, a permanent housing program for formerly homeless families. Best of all, Dinora began an adult educational program that will provide her with skills for daily living. "I wake up each morning, look around me... and I still can't believe it," Nubia says, "I am very grateful to the people here."
